To the right are lullabies, abstractions of Giving Bad People Good Ideas, by Death Grips, the entrance music for Lady Macbeth. The arpeggiated opening theme reappears not only in the witches’ summoning of the apparitions, portrayed by baby dolls, but in the fulfillment of their prophecies. An extension of these lullabies underscores the scene and later attack on Macduff’s wife and her castle, and Macduff’s entrance into Macbeth’s throne room preceding the final battle.

This all-female and non-binary production of the Scottish Play marked Spann’s sound design debut. After taking Theater Design the fall of her Senior year, a course led by the inimitable Jane Cox, Tess James, Rob Kaplowitz, Lawrence Moten, David Bengali, and Sarita Fellows, Spann tackled this project, which became her last at Princeton. Inspired by crumbling notions of womanhood and militarization of femininity, Spann dove into the world of bubblegum bass and hyper pop to sculpt hot pink sonic nods to these themes. Generously advised by Rob Kaplowitz, Spann combined these genres with her own composed cues to juxtapose the natural world of witches with the plastic glamor of the castle, exploring bloody hands, and the ambition of non-men.
